Micah Lumsden From Cocoa Styling

Hi, welcome to my first blog post.

Let’s start with the basics, my name is Michelle, but I also go by Micah because there were a thousand Michelles at my school, and everyone got a nickname to differentiate each other.

I'm a Blasian Latina (Chinese and Jamaican) born in Costa Rica. I’ve also lived in England and Ireland. Bristol and Dublin to be more specific, but right now I’m in Costa Rica again. I feel like having an online business has helped me stay close to my nuclear family and that’s one of the main reasons why I love my job. I always thought that I would have to move to a fashion capital to be able to pursue my fashion career, and Cocoa Styling has allowed me to stay close to the ones I love. Don’t get me wrong, I love traveling, every day is a new adventure, but I really appreciate being home.

Speaking of things that I like and enjoy; painting is something that I am very fond of, I started attending painting classes at 5 and stopped at 18, which prepared me to start with graphic design. I also like to go to the beach because I’m always cold, and my backyard is almost always my favorite sunbathing spot. I’m extremely picky with food, but I love cooking and experimenting with food, especially Asian cuisine and French pastries. Other random things I like are video games (Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, and the Sims are my favorites), sleeping, and organizing events.

And of course, fashion and shopping are some of my favorite things, I’m actually a shoe collector, and I will specialize in shoes and accessories design after the pandemic is over.

Welcome to my blog!

Welcome! I’m the creator of Cocoa Styling, you might come from that platform searching for more information, or maybe you are a new reader. In that case, you should know that I’m a certified stylist and a fashion designer that specialized in dark-skinned people and people of African descent.

I’ve always had a passion for fashion, which is extremely cliché, but at the beginning, I didn’t think this was the path I would be taking. I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was little because of how much I love animals, but then I realized that I wouldn’t like to see them suffering. In the end, I chose to be a graphic designer, but when I worked doing that, I noticed that I really didn’t like being at an office for prolonged hours.

I’ve always like to experiment with colors and clothes, ever since I was little, even wearing things that didn’t match at all because 3-year-old kids aren’t very good at creating outfits. When I was in school, I started designing clothes and my mom would take me to a seamstress to get them done and my grandma would make me things as well. That was all a hobby, but in the end, I decided to turn it into my career. My mom always told me to do what I love for a living and it won’t feel like work. I did, and it has been one of my best decisions ever.

It might be a bit unusual that a fashion blog’s aesthetic theme is plants and fashion. I really like the tropical aesthetic because of where I'm from and that’s pretty much what I see all day long, it’s familiar and I believe having familiar elements can make something new more amicable, and less intimidating. I feel like having these plants and leaves on all my pages gives them a clean and fresh feeling, but they also feel homey at least to me.

I had a hard time deciding which way I wanted my blog to go, but I finally settled in making it a bit more personal than Cocoa styling, I wanted to show people the person who is behind it and how my fashion and style journey unfolds because it’s an ongoing process and I hope we can all support each other on our own journeys.
